At Bury Archives is a collection of correspondence about the Shuttleworth family of Prestwich, Unsworth and North Cheshire, including a pedigree chart tracking the family tree back to the late sixteenth century. The letters, dated between 1979 and 1984, and the correspondents were Mr Frank Shuttleworth, who was researching his family tree, and the reference librarian at the time, Rita Hirst.
- FS's great-great grandfather was John Shuttleworth of Poppythorn in Prestwich (will 1823).
- FS's brother, (who was aged 84 in 1980 and living in Tiverton), recalled that the family had a farm on Rooden Lane in Prestwich.
- Letters from FS's father's brother Alf, one written in 1934 to his sister and the other written in 1942 to me stated "old John Shuttleworth came from Handforth, Cheshire to Prestwich, where he bought a farm."
- There was also a family tradition that they were descended from a junior branch of the Shuttleworths of Gawthorpe Hall. FS was in correspondence with the Keeper of Records at the hall to see if any evidence could be found.
- Their grandfather's grandfather clock now in possession of his brother in Exeter. FS's brother informed him that it belonged to the father of Hannah Kay who married my great grandfather Charles.
- FS was in possession of the drill book of John Shuttleworth, son of John & Hannah Shuttleworth (born 1788), his great-great uncle. He said that he was a sergeant in the 2nd Queens Dragoons at Waterloo. On the front cover of the drill book was what appeared to be a self-portrait.
- FS also had in his possession an old Prayer Book presented to a William Shuttleworth by Prestwich Church Sunday School on the 5th December 1836. A note beneath the inscriptions says he died on 16th June 1838. There is a burial in the Prestwich register, William Shuttleworth of Kirkhams was buried on the 18th June 1836, aged 22 years.
The pedigree chart is too big to reproduce here, but I've summarised some of it below. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the research - no sources are quoted.
