Bolton Parish Church - approximate grave positions

There are three main family clusters, explored in more detail below.   1343-44 and 1520-24 appear to be connected families, described below under "Longworth of Horrocks Fold".  2066-69 are described in below under "John Longworth of Bolton, Chapman".

Longworth of Horrocks Fold, Little Bolton

From the above grave stone numbers 1523, 1524, 1343 and 1344, cross referenced against the wills proved at Chester, I have drawn up the following family tree (click to enlarge):

We can also assume that the John Longworth in MI number 1522 is connected, given that his grave is next to the other family members, although I've not worked out his relationship:

There is a will of a "James Longworth of Chorley, Yeoman, 1775" which is at LRO, but the will contains no information that would link that family back to Bolton, so I do not know whether this is the same James Longworth who refused to take on execution of John's will.  More information about this family is further down in this post.

The Longworth family appear to have continued to farm at Horrocks Fold for some time, as this newspaper notice shows they were still there in 1902.

Stones of Horrocks Fold, Sharples (Little Bolton)

Next to the Longworth of Horrocks Fold grave is grave number 1520 - the Stones family, also of Horrocks Fold.  It seems likely that there is a relationship between the Longworth and Stones family.  There was a marriage of John Longworth and Mary Stones at St. Peter in 1731, which might be the link.  There are quite a few old wills of the Stones family of Sharples, going back as far as 1593.

James Longworth of Chorley, Yeoman, 1775

It appears that James' son John was a surgeon / doctor, as can be seen in the baptism records for his children at Upholland.

There are several records of a John Longworth of Manchester who I suspect may be the same person as above:

The Admission Register of the Manchester School
  • John, son of John Longworth, apothecary, Manchester, 20 Jan 1783
  • Thomas, son of John Longworth, surgeon, Manchester, 17 Jan 1794

Will: John Longworth of Manchester, surgeon 08 Jun 1804

Sarah Longworth - wife of J. Longworth Abode: Parish of Manchester Grave: O.G.

John Longworth of Bolton, Chapman

Grave number 2068 can also be cross referenced against the will of James Longworth of Little Bolton, Chapman, 1777, and John Longworth, the elder, of Bolton in the Moors, Chapman, 1740, and parish records, to produce the following family tree:

Apprentices' Indentures, 1710-1811
