Heaton Land Tax - One Pound, Nine Shillings and Four Pence

I've been having a look at the land tax records for Heaton, and was interested to try and trace the ownership of a particular property which is not named, but was rated at £1 10s 9d.

The owner of the property, or land, is stated as Starky, and in 1808 specifically Le Gendre Piers Starky.  He died in 1807 (according to this Wikipedia entry).  His will was proved at Chester.  (Le Gendre Pierce Starkie, of Huntroyd, co. Lancaster, esquire 16 Apr 1808).  A copy of his will is available on Ancestry.

The occupiers of the property are recorded as follows:-

  • 1787 - 1788 Peter Rothwell £1-9s-4d
  • 1789 - 1793 Thomas Rothwell
  • 1794 - 1816 Robert Tonge - charge increased to £1-10s-9d between 1799 and 1804, and then reverted back to the original amount
  • 1817 - 1829 John Bardsley (in 1818 owner changes to Henry Starkie)
  • 1830 - 1831 John Markland (junior)

The Bardsley family can still be found at Rogerstead on the census in 1841.  It is interesting to note that John and Ann had a son called Barnet Starkie Bardsley (bp. 1818).  Does the name Starkie hint at a connection with the landlord?
