1811 Partnership Between Thomas Hardcastle & Daniel Longworth

The Growth of the British Cotton Trade, 1780-1815
By Michael M. Edwards p195

In October 1811, undaunted, [Thomas] Hardcastle embarked on another adventure when he became a sleeping partner with Daniel Longworth, a Bolton bleacher. Hardcastle installed Longworth in a bleachworks and agreed to supply sufficient capital to maintain it in good working order.  He was determined to recoup some of the money he claimed to have lost in his previous partnership.  He demanded 'a clear annual rent of £600 for the use of the bleaching works and machinery', and 5 per cent interest on the capital he advanced to the firm.  Hardcastle was again unlucky.  After only a few months Longworth was accuesed of 'using £3,000 of the partnership monies for his own purposes in fitting up a new bleachworks in Little Lever'.

The Partnership between myself and Mr. Thomas Hardcastle, as bleachers, at Firwood, under the firm Hardcastle and Longworth was dissolved by mutual consent, on the thirtieth day of October last, and Mr. John Wood, of King-street, Manchester, public accountant, has been legally appointed by us to receiv, adjust, and settle all accounts due and owing, by and to the said late Partnership concern.

I beg leave to add my sincere Thanks, for the very liberal encouragement afforded by our Friends to that concern.  I have now established myself in the Bleaching business, at Lever Bank, near Bolton, with new Machinery, and on the most improved plan, which I flatter myself to bleach at equal if not superior to any other House in the trade, and shall be happy in the continuance of a share of their future commands.

I remain your most obedient,
And obliged humble servant,
