Bolton Chronicle - Saturday 16 December 1837 - STEALING IRON. Charles Chew, a youth, was charged with stealing a quantity of iron from the coal works of Mr. William Longworth, of Heaton. Mr. T. HOLDEN appeared for the prosecution, and stated that of late Mr. Longworth had suffered considerable losses from persons stealing different articles from the works. James Pendlebury stated that he saw the prisoner conveying something from the colliery on Tuesday afternoon last, which he hid in a field on the opposite side of the road. Knowing that Mr. Longworth had been robbed to a great extent, he gave immediate information, and the prisoner was taken into custody.
Bolton Chronicle - Saturday 26 May 1838 - THE REAL OLD ENGLISH GENTLEMAN - On Monday last, William Longworth, Esq. of Land Heaton, and his sister held their rent day, at the house of Mr. Yates Bilsborrow, Black Bull Inn, Horwich, on which occasion upwards of seventy of their tenants sat down to a plentiful and substantial supper, got up in Mr. and Mrs. Bilsborrow's usual good taste. After supper the tenants were treated to plenty of good English ale and punch and they "tripp'd it on the light fantastic tow" until day light. Mr. Longworth and his sister in their accustomed and affable manner, remaining with them during the whole time and defraying the expenses, which has always been their practice on every rent day.

Bolton Evening News - Thursday 07 June 1877 - FUNERAL OF MR. NATHANIEL LONGWORTH OF HORWICH - The interment of the remains of the late Mr. Nathaniel Longworth, Esq., of Vale Hall, Horwich, who died on Monday at his residence, in the 41st year of his age, took place at the parish churchyard Horwich. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. H. S. Pigott, vicar. The following was the order of the cortege:- First carriage containing the Rev. H. S. Pigott, vicar, the Rev. W. Maynard, curate, and Mr. J. R. P. Payne, solicitor, Manchester; The hearse, containing the coffin which consisted of shell, zinc and polished oak with panels and brass mountings, with the inscription "Nathaniel Longworth, died 4th June, 1877, aged 40 years;" Second carriage, containing John Longworth, Esq., Horwich, father [Note that the newspaper report is incorrect here - his father was William and was already dead, as the monumental inscription shows], Mr. Jackson, father-in-law, and Messrs. Henry and Edward Jackson, brothers-in-law of the deceased; 3rd carriage, containing Messrs. Barmyeat, Huyton, Liverpool; William Buckley, High Broughton, and Frank Walmsley, Belmont; 4th carriage, containing Messrs. William Greenhalgh, Wilderswood, and William and Joseph Howarth of Wallsuches. The interment took place in the family vault, and was witnessed by a large number of persons. The funeral arrangements were ably conducted by Mr. Brown, of the firm Messrs. G. J. Francis and Co., of this town.
