1779 Release Document - Property in Mealhouse Lane, Bolton |
Release relating to property in Deansgate, otherwise Mealhouse Lane in Bolton-le-Moors; three cottages, ten other cottages, one warehouse, three loom shops, three brew shops, one stable, one garden and nine small back yards.
Samuel Smith, yeoman, late of Bolton, died without a will, leaving two daughters:
- Mary Lomax, wife of Adam Lomax of Turton (late Mary Marsh, wife of Peter Marsh, chapman of Little Hulton)
- Alice Wood, wife of John Wood, mercer of Rochdale
John Smith, son of Samuel Smith, who died within his father's lifetime, had a "large capital messuage" called "Samuel Smith's", now known as The Wool Pack on the south side of Deansgate. John Smith left a will dated 10th May 1756.
John Wood left a will dated 1766, and Alice Wood in 1768, leaving bequests to William Wood.
The children of Peter & Mary Marsh were:
- Mary, wife of Thomas Cross, yeoman of Ainsworth
- Peter Marsh of Breightmet, yeoman
- John Marsh of Bolton, yeoman
- Samuel Marsh of Breightmet, print cutter
- Betty, wife of John Longworth, yeoman of Horwich
Property purchased by John Browne and William Holden of Liverpool and his wife Sarah, for the consideration of:
- £526 to William Wood
- £250 to Adam Lomax
- £188 to children of Mary Lomax (late Marsh)
Anciently the inheritance of Ralph Aynsworth of Highfield, Farnworth. Afterwards John Okey of Bolton, gentleman, and then part of the inheritance of Mary Hatton, wife of Richard Hatton of Rumworth. It then descended to Joseph Hatton, and then to Margaret Leyland of Bolton, widow, and then to Samuel Smith.
